Wet and dry vacuum, industrial vacuum and backpack vacuum cleaner side by side

Quick answer

Choose a wet & dry vacuum (15–80 litres, one to three motors) for daily cleaning in hotels, offices, shops and homes. Choose an industrial vacuum for continuous use, heavy dust, debris or liquids in workshops, factories and warehouses, and an explosion-proof model where combustible dust is present. Backpack vacuums suit stairs, cinemas, buses and tight spaces.

As an authorised dealer for VOOT cleaning machines in Goa, the question we hear most is “which vacuum should I buy?”. The honest answer depends on where you will use it, how often, and what you need to pick up.

The three main types

1. Wet & dry vacuum cleaners

Commercial workhorses that pick up both dust and liquids. Tanks range from 15 L for room cleaning to 80 L for large areas, with one, two or three motors. Look for HEPA filtration and a filter-cleaning system. Examples in our range: VWD-30/1, VWD-60/2 and VWD-80/3.

2. Backpack vacuum cleaners

Worn on the operator’s back, ideal for stairs, auditoriums, buses, aircraft cabins and offices with many desks. Example: VBV 5-1 E.

3. Industrial vacuum cleaners

Built for continuous duty with stronger motors, larger filters and tougher bodies – often stainless steel. Used in factories, pharmaceutical and food plants, workshops and construction. Specialised versions include explosion-proof models for dust-hazard (Zone 22) areas, such as the VIV 75 EX Z22.

Five questions to decide

  1. Wet, dry or both? If you clean spills, washrooms or flooded areas, you need wet & dry.
  2. How many hours a day? Several hours of continuous use points to industrial.
  3. What are you picking up? Fine dust needs good filtration; heavy debris needs a strong motor and wide hose.
  4. How big is the area? Larger tanks mean fewer stops to empty.
  5. Any hazards? Combustible dust requires an explosion-proof machine.

Caring for your vacuum so it keeps performing

A good vacuum cleaner lasts for years if it is looked after. Most performance problems come from blocked filters or a full tank rather than a weak motor. A few simple habits help:

  • Empty the tank after every use, especially after picking up liquid, so it does not smell or grow mould in Goa’s humidity.
  • Clean the filters regularly as the manufacturer recommends, and let washable filters dry completely before refitting them.
  • Check the hose and nozzles for blockages if suction drops suddenly.
  • Use the right filter for fine dust such as cement or ash, which can clog a standard filter quickly.
  • Inspect the power cable for cuts or damage, and never vacuum water with a machine that is not rated for wet pickup.
  • Store it dry, with the tank open, in a place away from direct rain and sea air.

Frequently asked questions

What size wet and dry vacuum do I need for a hotel?

For room cleaning, a 15–30 L wet & dry vacuum is easy to move between rooms. For lobbies, banquet halls and common areas, a 60–80 L multi-motor model saves time.

What is the difference between a wet & dry vacuum and an industrial vacuum?

Wet & dry vacuums are designed for regular commercial cleaning. Industrial vacuums have stronger motors, larger filters and tougher bodies for continuous, heavy-duty use.

When do I need an explosion-proof vacuum?

When vacuuming combustible dust – for example in some pharmaceutical, chemical or food plants. These areas need a vacuum certified for the hazard zone.
