Quick answer
After the Goa monsoon (June–September), deep clean in this order: 1) air out and dry the house, 2) treat mould in cupboards, walls and bathrooms, 3) shampoo or steam damp sofas, mattresses and carpets, 4) pressure wash moss off laterite steps, compound walls and terraces, and 5) clean fans, ACs, grills and windows. October–November is the best time to do it.
Goa’s monsoon is beautiful – and hard on homes. Four months of heavy rain and humidity leave behind black moss on laterite, a musty smell in cupboards, mould spots on walls and sofas that never quite dry. Before the tourist season starts and before Diwali and Christmas guests arrive, most Goan homes need a proper reset. This checklist is based on what Swachh’s housekeeping crews see on jobs across Goa every October and November.
Why does a Goa home need a post-monsoon deep clean?
Relative humidity in coastal Goa stays very high through the rains. Moisture settles into fabrics, wood, grout and painted walls, and that is exactly what mould and mildew need. Outside, constant rain turns laterite steps, compound walls and courtyards green and slippery. A regular sweep and mop does not remove any of this – it needs drying, the right cleaning agents and, outdoors, pressure.
Room-by-room post-monsoon checklist
1. Living room
- Open all windows on the first dry, sunny days and run ceiling fans to dry the house out.
- Vacuum and then shampoo fabric sofas and cushions that smell musty – surface wiping will not remove trapped moisture and odour.
- Vacuum carpets on both sides; shampoo and dry them fully before putting them back.
- Wipe wooden furniture and check undersides and backs for white or green mould.
- Dust fan blades, light fittings and curtain rods.
2. Bedrooms and wardrobes
- Empty cupboards completely, wipe shelves with a mould-safe cleaner and leave doors open to dry.
- Air or wash bed linen, pillows and blankets that were stored during the rains.
- Steam or vacuum mattresses – they absorb humidity and dust mites.
- Check walls behind beds and wardrobes for damp patches.
3. Kitchen
- Degrease the hob, tiles and chimney exterior.
- Check under the sink and behind the fridge for leaks and mould.
- Empty and clean the fridge, including seals and the drip tray.
- Throw out dry stock (rice, flour, spices) that has picked up moisture.
4. Bathrooms
- Scrub grout lines and silicone joints where black mould collects.
- Descale taps and shower heads.
- Clean exhaust fans – they work overtime in the monsoon.
5. Outdoors: laterite, walls and terraces
- Pressure wash laterite steps, pathways, compound walls and courtyards to remove moss and algae. See our pressure washing service.
- Clear gutters and drain outlets on terraces.
- Clean window grills and shutters, which often show rust and grime after the rains.
- If you have a pool, scrub and wash the deck before the season.
What can you do yourself and what needs professionals?
Airing the house, washing linen and clearing cupboards are easy DIY jobs. Three tasks are usually better left to a trained crew with machines:
- Sofa, carpet and mattress shampooing – extraction machines pull water back out, so fabric dries faster and does not smell. See sofa, carpet and mattress shampooing.
- Pressure washing – the right pressure removes moss without damaging laterite or paint.
- Whole-home deep cleaning – fans, ACs, windows, grout and kitchen degreasing in one visit. See home deep cleaning.
When is the best time for post-monsoon cleaning in Goa?
Wait for a stretch of dry days – usually from early October. Cleaning during the last rains means fabrics and walls get damp again. Booking early also helps: the weeks before Diwali, the Goa tourist season and Christmas are the busiest time of the year for cleaning teams.

Frequently asked questions
When should I deep clean my house after the monsoon in Goa?
From early October, once you get several dry, sunny days in a row. That lets sofas, mattresses and walls dry fully after cleaning.
How do I get rid of the musty smell after the monsoon?
Dry the house out with open windows and fans, empty and wipe cupboards, and shampoo or steam sofas, carpets and mattresses that have absorbed moisture. Odour usually comes from damp fabric, not just the air.
How do you remove moss from laterite steps?
A pressure washer at the right setting removes moss and algae from laterite without eroding the stone. Avoid strong acids, which can damage laterite and plants nearby.
